Drumheller — Why It’s The Perfect Photoshoot Location

There are always reasons to shoot in the mountains, or in open natural locations. Having lush trees, evergreens, the mountains, or beautiful prairies are beautiful options we have ready to use in Alberta. Yes, these options are undeniably beautiful, but, they are common. They have been seen in your friends engagement photos, your sister’s wedding photos, and in your facebook friend’s baby announcement photos. These backdrops are everywhere, and I always like to challenge myself as a photographer to set my work apart.

Don’t get me wrong, your girl is ALWAYS up for a trip to the mountains (I love a beautiful mountainous drive to a destination wedding!), and I’ve found some fantastic prairie landscape in central Alberta that are breathtaking, close, and convenient. However, the hidden gem in our province, and the hot photography location of the moment, is Drumheller.

When you hear Drumheller, you probably just think of a dinosaur museum and a giant T-Rex. It’s so much more than that. Not only is the natural desert landscape of Drumheller unique and beautiful, it’s a fantastic little town to spend the day in!

Here are a few reasons why you should choose Drumheller as your next photoshoot location.

  1. It’s not a tourist trap. While it’s entirely tourist-worthy, Drumheller isn’t a hotspot tourist location bogged down with crowds, like Banff (yet). However, like I said — I think it’s booming, so, best to shoot there sooner than later before too many people catch on! It’s so easy to get idyllic, solo shots without a soul around. In more popular tourist locations, this can be very challenging.
  2. Unique landscape. Like I mentioned in the intro, the landscape here is like nowhere else in Alberta. Most people could look at your images and think you’re anywhere in the world. This scenery as your backdrop could look like anywhere in Phoenix or even Abu Dhabi. It will make your photos appear more worldly and unique than the typical mountaintop photoshoot you’re seeing on your Facebook feed.

I chose Drumheller as my location for my most recent styled shoot. It turned out better than I could have ever expected! The landscape and scenery MADE this shoot but so did all the amazing vendors who participated.
